Market Outlook – Stabilizing

The weak bond market has been a thorn in the side of small cap investors for months. Last week, it fell sharply but then rebounded strong, even after bad inflation news on a stronger than expected CPI number. Still in a downward trend but the bounce back on bad news is a sign that the sellers are getting tired.

The critical thing to watch for is a break of the downward trend on the IWM that has been in place since mid August. Such a break is overdue and likely to happen soon, but until it does, we have to remain fussy and patient. I will let you know when it happens.

This Week’s Market Minutes Video – Will Inflation Crash the Stock Market?
Will inflation crash the stock market? High oil prices are keeping inflation high which then keeps interest rates high. High interest rates affect stocks negatively. In this video, I show the state of interest rates and the likely affect they will have on the stock market. Plus, I provide my analysis of the overall market and look at the trade of the week on SGRX.

Commentary – Can You Make a Living Trading Stocks?

Can you make a living trading stocks?

Of course you can. Just like you can make a living being a doctor, lawyer, professional athlete, or plumber. But there is one important difference between those professions and trading the stock market.

They all have a barrier to entry.

You can't become a doctor without years of education and training. You can't become a professional athlete without thousands of hours of practice. Even becoming a plumber requires an apprenticeship and experience.

Trading stocks is different.

Anyone can open a brokerage account, deposit some money, and start trading. There are no qualifications required, no exams to pass, and no experience necessary.

And that is one of the biggest reasons why most aspiring traders fail.

Imagine going to a surgeon who tells you they learned how to perform open-heart surgery by reading a couple of books.

Would you trust them with your life?

Of course not.

Yet thousands of people approach trading exactly that way. They read a book, learn a few chart patterns, watch some videos, and believe they are ready to compete against professionals who have spent years developing their skills.

When they lose money, they blame the market, their strategy, or bad luck.

The real problem is that they never took the time to learn how to trade.

Successful trading requires the same commitment to learning as any other profession.

You need to understand how the market works, develop strategies that give you an edge, learn to manage risk, and perhaps most importantly, control the emotions that lead to bad decisions.

Knowing what to do is not the same as being able to do it consistently.

A professional athlete doesn't become successful by reading about their sport. They practise until their skills become second nature.

Trading is no different.

The best way to become a successful trader is to approach it like a profession. Study the market, develop a trading strategy, practise with simulated trades or small positions, and prove that you can consistently follow your rules before putting meaningful capital at risk.

Your first goal should not be to make money. It should be to develop the skills that allow you to make money consistently.

After more than 35 years of trading, I believe most aspiring traders fail not because trading is too difficult, but because they underestimate how much learning is required.

They are attracted to the potential rewards but unwilling to invest the time necessary to develop the skills.

The stock market makes it easy to get started, but that doesn't make it easy to succeed.

There is no shortcut to becoming a successful doctor, lawyer, athlete, or plumber. Why should trading be any different?

The stock market has no barrier to entry, but successful trading does.

Most aspiring traders never succeed because they never take the time to learn.

I ran a Market Scan for stocks that have a Sentiment Stockscores of 60 or higher and were up at least 5% today. I also required that they trade at least $10,000,000 of volume to avoid stocks that lack liquidity. I then inspected their charts in search of promising chart patterns. Here are two to consider

1. NAUT
NAUT is breaking up from a short ascending triangle pattern, which is a sign of growing optimism. The volume has been strong for the past month, indicating investors are excited and the buyers are in control. Support at $1.80.

2. RPD
RPD has a promising pattern, but it is not worth considering until it can break through resistance at $15. Watch for that as a signal to consider.
